Can we interest you in a fish special with mushy peas? What about a pattie butty? Maybe your order is a bit out there and you like a spam fritter with curry sauce?
Now we’ve got your mouth watering at the thought of piping hot chips doused in salt and vinegar – or chip spice – it’s time to drool over our favourite fish and chip spots in Hull and East Yorkshire.
Because if there’s one thing that Hull’s not lacking in, it’s decent places to satisfy your deep-fried needs.
A fish and chip vendor as old as time – 1888 to be precise - Bob Carvers is home to the original pattie. If you're looking for a bit of tradition and nostalgia then Bob Carvers is the spot for you, and with 134 years of experience under their belt, you can’t go wrong.
2. Lion & Key
If you find yourself in the picturesque streets of Old Town and you’ve worked up an appetite rambling over the cobbles, pop into Lion & Key. It’s the perfect pub spot if you like sitting down and enjoying a pint with your battered haddock.
If a park bench overlooking a pond is more your style, give East Park Chippy a visit. After you’ve tucked in, you can take a stroll around the vast park opposite. After all, they do say that a good walk after eating aids digestion.
4. Challis’s
A Hessle Road staple serving up good quality fish and chips with an even better value. You’ll be greeted with that old-fashioned Hessle Road charm. Who doesn’t like a bit of chit-chat before they tuck into chips? Remember to take your cash.
5. Sullivans
Fish and chips by the sea, you just can’t beat it. If you’re getting out of town for a trip to the sea side then why not pop into Sullivans in Hornsea. You can takeaway to eat them with the sea breeze in your hair or sit in if you want to avoid those pesky seagulls.
6. Dave’s Mobile Fish & Chip Van
Taking takeaway to the next level, Dave and his van visit villages throughout the East Riding during the week across tea time. You can also hire him for events.
Here’s one for the vegans or those who just like to try something new. Newland Fisheries is the only vendor in Hull to offer ‘vish’ and chips, a plant-based alternative using banana blossom and tofu instead of fish and meat.
8. Kingfisher
Last but certainly not least is Kingfisher. Located on Endike Lane, the shop has been voted one of the best fish and chip shops in Hull. Need we say more?
