Summer activity ideas for the family
It promises to be a summer to remember and Hull and the East Riding has the perfect places to enjoy the sun, whatever your budget.
This summer will be the first in three years without the limitations of Covid-19 but, as a nation, we are facing an entirely different challenge.
The cost of living crisis is making it increasingly difficult to enjoy a perfect day out – but we’ve got your back.
When Lagoon Hull is in place, summers beside the water will be all the more special but, in the meantime, our part of the world already has so much to enjoy.
If you’re in need of some day-out inspiration, look no further:
Enjoy our beautiful beaches
We are blessed with dozens of the most beautiful beaches in the UK – and they’re all just a short journey away.
From bustling Bridlington and Hornsea to more peaceful spots like Fraisthorpe and Spurn Point, using the beach is free and a wonderful way to soak up the sun or enjoy games as a family.
2. Spend a day on the farm
Who doesn’t love being surrounded by cute animals?
We’ve got several brilliant working farms where you can spend a day petting the animals and watching them go about their daily lives. A farm trip is both educational and a lot of fun.
East Hull Community Farm is free to families and individuals, with just a small cost to groups.
3. Seek thrills on the water
Want to cool off? Why not head onto the water?
East Park’s famous swan boats give the perfect opportunity to unwind on the water in one of east Hull’s hidden gems.
And while you’re there, take a ride on the iconic 1929 Splash Boat to cool off – it’s one of only two left in the UK that are still in working order.
4. Fun in the sun
If you love East Park, then why not try out any number of Hull’s other green spaces?
West Park, Pearson Park, Pickering Park, Bude Park, Oak Road Playing Fields and Peter Pan Park are all among those on our doorstep – more than enough options to tick off during the summer holidays.
5. A trip down memory lane
Even with schools out for summer, you can make use of Hull’s free museums in the city’s Museums Quarter.
The Hull and East Riding Museum and the Streetlife Museum of Transport are both open this summer and tell tales ranging from our early existence to Hull’s far more recent past. From woolly mammoths to carriage rides, our museums have an eclectic mix of attractions.
6. Spotlight on Spurn
It’s not the first place you picture when someone mentions a safari, but did you know it’s an option right here in East Yorkshire?
Spurn Point is one of our most idyllic yet rugged landscapes and what better way to discover its beauty than by having a guided tour onboard an ex-military 4x4 to navigate its varied terrain.
But even if you would rather keep costs down, Spurn’s stunning beaches and windswept views make it a beautifully peaceful day out.
7. Sunning on the Humber
Humber Bridge Country Park has it all. The free-to-enter park is a haven for wildlife thanks to its woods, meadows, ponds and cliffs.
The dog-friendly nature reserve also backs on to the Humber Estuary for a picturesque stroll beneath the bridge – and there’s often an ice cream van onsite!
8. A shady spot
If you’re seeking shade, then why not pop into Hull Minster.
It’s free to pop your head in and explore the largest parish church in England, complete with its recent refurbishment. As an added extra, you can also book tower and history tours to find out more about the building at the heart of the city’s Old Town.
9. Taking in the town
It’s a classic but hundreds of people still enjoy it every year.
Hull’s Fish Trail is made up of 41 fish built into the pavements of the Old Town and Fruit Market.
The two-hour meander takes in many of the city’s other popular spots including pubs and cafes, and starts just outside Hull City Hall.
